Chapter 11

The next day was Sunday, and the couple, madly in love and exhausted by the time the sun blazed through the windows, slept late. Very late. In fact, they were in the hotel restaurant to eat at two in the afternoon, showered, refreshed, and ready to enjoy every minute they had together. They sat on the terrace of the restaurant looking out at Santa Teresa, sprawled at the top of a hill, and offering a magnificent view of Guanabara Bay.

It was too late for breakfast, but the lunch menu offered many options. They shared pan-fried salmon with chipotle pepper and salad, accompanied by grapefruit and cassava fries. Washing it down with lime-flavored mineral water, they leaned back to take a break while waiting for their espressos to arrive.

Adam held his new wife’s hand and looked at the gold band on her left finger. “I love you so much, Ella.”

Under the table, she rubbed her ankles next to his. “I love you with all my heart, Adam. I’ll always love you. Always.”

The steaming espressos arrived and they began sipping the rich Brazilian coffee.

Ella put her tiny china cup back on the matching saucer. “I’m glad we got to say goodbye to Fiorella and Adrian before we left last night.”

“Yes, and I told her not to even think about Fiore’s while they are away. She’s hired competent staff to oversee the day-to-day operations, and I assured her for the hundredth time that I’m here if anything is needed.”

“Her restaurant means so much to her. I can understand how hard it is to get away. But she has been planning her honeymoon for years.”

“Yes, Adrian has had enough time to save money for it. Since she was a young girl she has wanted to go to Argentina. It’s not even that far, but still, somewhere you just never get to.”

“And thankfully, Adrian was able to get a full three weeks away from the law firm. They will have a great time.”

“No kidding. Weeks of food, wine, and countryside.”

“Sounds like home.”

Adam laughed. “It does. Well, they will be in Mendoza part of the time. I hear the local food there is remarkable. Maybe she will meet some Italians and learn a few Argentina-style Italian dishes.”

“She told me there are lots of Italians in Argentina.”

Adam took the last sip of his espresso. “Feel like getting out?”

“What…you think you’re so irresistible that I’d spend all three days here locked in the hotel room with you?”

“Well, I am pretty irresistible.”

Ella swatted his arm playfully. “Okay, show me the town, Romeo.”

The town was filled with cultural centers, restaurants, and live music. Adam and Ella toured around on foot, making their way through the winding, narrow cobblestone streets. The area had resisted development and retained its colonial charm. When they tired of walking up and down, they took the streetcar. They saw everything from sidewalk mosaics and palatial mansions to artsy galleries.

Over their brief stay, they spent part of the afternoons lounging on the terrace of their suite, enjoying the panoramic view.
